Episode 90: DJ Foxytrot

My pal Athena (aka Foxytrot) is a DJ with a residency at Baxter's Speakeasy and has DJ'd numerous other places and events in the great city of Akron. We met on a night that I was playing records at Mr. Zubs and I've been meaning to have her a a guest ever since. The question is; why haven't I until now? An even more important question; why was I not aware of Akron's own Ruby and the Romantics prior to this recording?
This was a fun one that was long overdue. Here are some of the folks we talk about- Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood, Ruby and the Romantics, Apollonia 6, Kay Bell and the Tuffs, Bonnie Jo Mason and many more!

Episode 89: Cousteau'd - C.O.C. "Animosity"

Instead of the guest picking 5 pieces of music, or a draft or me just rambling as I do on the "Five and Change" episodes, I thought I would go with a new format. I wanted to start doing "deep dives" on records that interest me for one reason or another. I went with one of my favorites, "Animosity" by C.O.C. I am joined by Rich and Will for this one and we used a scoring method developed by my buddy Bob Shedd.
As usual there are a lot of detours. Not only do we talk at length about C.O.C., but we also name check Alienator, Crumbsuckers, The Accused and a few others. 
We had a good time recording this one - I hope you enjoy it as well.

Marc Sabo is the bassist/vocalist of the doom project Orion's Sword. He is also responsible for the Excised/Anatomised podcast. Each season on his podcast Marc dissects and discusses a band's catalog at length. I appeared on the season dedicated to Prong. He has since returned the favor and made an appearance on the Postscript twice. This is a conversation recorded BEFORE his prior appearances but not edited until recently.

Gavin is a lifer. Whether as a musician (Absolution, Burn, Canonized, NY Hoods, Die 116) or as a martial artist, he has demonstrated a high level of dedication to his craft. Which, made him a perfect guest for the podcast! I mean, folks that are in it for the long haul SURELY have opinions on music (and other topics). Gavin did not disappoint!

As I grow older, summers seem to go by much more quickly than they did when I was young. I doubt I am the only one experiencing this phenomenon. A brief (and busy) this past summer was, I still managed to see a show or two and get some new records. I thought it would be fun to cap off the season by talking with my dude, Rich Miles about some of the music that has caught our ears. Most of it is new (to us, at least), but revisited some old favorites as well.

That BRAND SPANKING NEW EPISODE that I have been holding over your heads, like an audio Sword of Damocles has dropped. It is nice to be back talking music with friends and MAN there is a lot of talk this episode!
I'm joined by Tim Shauver (Shotgun Sodomy), Marc Sabo (Orion's Sword and the Excised/Anatomised podcast), as well as my old buddy Rich Miles.
On this episode we are talking 80s metal. What bands do we think folks should be looking to in lieu of "The Big Four"? We answer that very question in the form of a "draft". 
It was a fun exercise and a good conversation - even if I railroad everyone. What can I say? It has been a long time since I've recorded.
In any case, there are going to be some slight changes to podcast that you will notice in future episodes. Hopefully for the better!

I have a love/hate relationship with New York Hardcore. The stuff I love – I love A LOT. The stuff I loathe… Well, let’s just focus on the stuff I love. On this mini-episode I ramble on about arguably the most widely known and influential “scene” spawned by hardcore-punk. This certainly isn’t a historical review – just some random thoughts on some well covered ground. If you’re a new to this strain of hardcore – this is a good primer (subjectively). If you have a good handle on it, listen anyway and send me hate mail after.

It’s an AMBUSH!!! But, it’s also Halloween so we’re talkin’ Danzig. But in the spirit of the season, TRICKS not treats, and jump scares. I’ve attacked several of my unknowing friends with a question; Of Danzig’s three biggest projects (Danzig, Samhain and Misfits), what are the 3 best songs?

Pete has gone on record as saying that The Misfits are NOT a Halloween band. Of course, Pete is entitled to his entirely wrong opinion.

Jon Vinson is a busy guy. At the time of this interview, not only was he the drummer for Axioma, Six Kills Nine, occasionally for Child Bite, Jesus Egg and Persistent Aggressor. But, I think things have slowed down a bit and he currently sits on the throne for Frayle. Jon is also a drum instructor and an insane marathon runner. Jon is incredibly talented which explains why he is in such demand.He was kind enough to sit and chat with me a bit about his favorite records and drummers. We go into the weeds a bit about drumming in general and cover a ton of ground musically.

Episode 26: DX Ferris (author ”33 1/3 Reign in Blood” and ”Slayer 66 2/3"), Part 2

"David Copperfield, Doug Henning or Gandalf"
DX Ferris is a native of Pittsburgh and Akron based author that covered local and national music in Scene magazine. He has had work published in Rolling Stone, Decibel, AV Club and The Village Voice. Ferris is also the author of Good Advice from Good Fellas, Good Advice from Professional Wrestling and his regular comic strip Suburban Metal Dad. Additionally he authored an extensive biography about Pittsburgh legend Donnie Iris and the Cruisers as well as the 331/3 edition that covered the making of Reign in Blood. Plus, he wrote the in depth biography "Slayer: 66 2/3: The Jeff & Dave Years". And if that weren't enough, Ferris has a podcast called "Talkin' Slayer".  I always love it when we get a chance to hang out – even if it is virtually. We had a great conversation about a ton of stuff! Enjoy!
